Many times, teens encounter problems that seem overwhelming. Being a teenager is a very complex and difficult time and, as a parent, it is difficult to know when your teen is simply “acting like a teenager” and when there is a more serious issue that needs to be addressed.
It is VERY important to stay in touch with your teen and make time to talk to them. Let your teen know that you are available to listen. Be sure that your teen knows that you are there if they need you.
Sometimes, however, what your teen is going through could be a more serious problem than typical teenage “angst”. On the next page are some warning signs that may indicate a bigger problem. If you feel something more might be going on with your teen, contact your doctor or a local mental health professional.
