Click on the boxes below to learn how memory works!
Information
Information gets to your brain though one of your senses (seeing, hearing, touching, etc).
Working memory
When you pay attention to what is coming in, the information is temporarily held in your working memory until you encode it or stop thinking about it.
Encoding
When you use or rehearse the information, it gets encoded and moves into your long term memory.
Long term memory
Your long term memory is where you store the majority of your memories and it’s where you go when you want to retrieve or get to the information you have in your brain.
Retrieval
When you bring information out of your long-term memory. Note: if at any of the stages, you don’t pay attention to the information coming in, what you’ve learned fades and you forget it.
Brain injury can cause problems at any step in the memory process. In the next pages, we will discuss things you can do at each memory step to help you remember and access information.
