Memory requires lots of areas of the brain to work together. Some of these areas of the brain can be affected by a brain injury, which can then affect your memory.

Attention

Teens with TBI often experience difficulty paying attention to uninteresting tasks and have difficulty switching between tasks. Difficulties in these areas can result in problems with goal setting and managing behavior. Also, these difficulties can negatively impact school performance.

Some of areas of the brain that can be affected by brain injury are:

Perception

  • A teen with TBI may still hear and see as well as before the injury, but have difficulty listening to and seeing complex or disorganized information.

Reasoning/problem solving

  • Teens may be disorganized in their reasoning and have trouble with real world problem solving.

Organization

  • Often teens may appear fine until they face new or complex tasks.
