Working memory is like a scratch pad that holds information for you to use, like what you need to do, or a telephone number, or the date of a party. Information does not last long in working memory and if it is not used or filed, it will fade.
What interferes with working memory? Distractions.
Distractions can bump information out of working memory and distractions may even distort information. Think about the last time you had to remember a phone number and someone started saying a bunch of other numbers. Things can get jumbled up.
