If the doctors determine that you have post-traumatic epilepsy, you will more than likely be given medications called anti-epileptic drugs (or AEDs for short) to control the amount of seizures you are having.

This doesn’t mean you have to be on these medications for the rest of your life. Most doctors will stop the medications once you stop having seizures for a period of 3 months to 2 years.

It’s important to follow the doctor’s directions when treating seizures. The doctor may try many different medications in order to stop the seizures. Sometimes the medications can cause side effects. The doctor’s goal is to find a medication that both stops the seizures while at the same time giving you very few side effects. This can be a tough balance to find and it is important that you and your family talk to your doctor about the side effects. Keep an open mind and be patient as you work with the doctor to find the best type of medication for you. Tell your doctor if you’re having side effects because there are many medications that you can try.
