It is also important for a teen to learn how to ask for help, but parents and teachers also have to make sure expectations are realistic.

For example, a common accommodation is to get extended time on a test “as needed”

  • If a teen has difficulty with organization and planning, expecting the teen to think ahead and remember to ask for extra time rarely works
  • It is easy for a teacher with multiple classes and students to forget specific accommodations if they are not used regularly.
  • It can be difficult to ask an authority figure for ‘special treatment’, and can set teens and teachers up for miscommunication; or the teen may just avoid asking all together.
