Below are some ways to eliminate distractions, which will help you improve your attention and memory:

Make eye contact with the person talking to you–this will help you focus your attention. If you are in class, take notes on what is said or what you are reading.

Things going on in your environment can distract you–turn off the TV or go to a quiet place. Physical symptoms can be distracting- eliminate them by taking a nap, having a snack, etc.

If you are feeling really angry, sad, scared or happy, make a plan to calm yourself or talk about your feelings.

Parent Tips:

  • Before giving your teen instructions, make sure you have their attention.
  • Before you start telling them what you want them to do, have them turn off electronics and make sure they are looking you in the eye.

Teen Tips:

  • At school: If a teacher is talking, look at the teacher or write down what they are saying.
  • At home: Make eye contact if your parent is asking you to do something. To make sure you know what they said, repeat it back to them.
