Brothers and sisters can be affected just as much by brain injury as parents can be. Depending on the age of the sibling, they may feel that they could have protected a brother or sister or maybe that the injury was their fault. Different children are affected in different ways.

Some children become fearful and overly cautious. Others may become angry and rebellious. Still others may act like nothing has changed.

All of these responses are normal reactions to the uncertainty and disruption of brain injury. The following pages provide more information about how children of different ages may react to a sibling’s injury and what you as parents can do to help them cope.
