When facing a difficult task it is very important to create positive momentum that will get you going and keep you moving from start to finish.

This means starting tough tasks on a positive note.

Creating Positive Momentum

Here is a list of some suggestions for ways to create positive momentum.

Set yourself up for success by starting a task refreshed and in a positive mood

  • Take a break and have a snack first!
  • Try doing your favorite subject first so you’ll be on a roll when you get to the things you struggle with

Praise yourself

  • I did a great job finishing my homework; I’ve really been working well
  • I’ve been trying hard to stay organized. I think it is really working!

Think about a positive event from earlier in the day or in the week

  • I can definitely do this, remember when I made that three-pointer at my basketball game? That felt great!

Remind yourself of past successes

  • I remember how well I did when I spent time preparing for the test and how great that felt. It’d be so good to do it again!

Get help with some problems to get started and then work on your own

  • Ask your parent or teacher for help with the first few problems to get you started on the right track before you take over
